Sabal Palm with 5 heads

If you're looking for a beautiful palm that is native to the US, the Sabal Palm Tree (Sabal palmetto) is a great choice. A native of Florida, the Bahamas, Cuba and the Turks and Caicos Islands, it is naturally well-suited to the southern United States. Whether looking for a focal point in your formal garden, or a pair of palms to hang your hammock from, this beautiful palm will help add a touch of beach paradise to your garden.

The Sabal Palm Tree is a larger variety of palmetto palm, growing to an average of sixty five feet tall. Larger specimens have been known to reach upwards of one hundred feet in height. Often known by several other names, such as the Carolina Palmetto, Swamp Cabbage, Cabbage Palm, Blue Palmetto, Cabbage Palmetto and Palmetto Palm, it is the state tree of both Florida and South Carolina. Although it can grow to great heights, it is a slow-growing species. We have found that it can grow as much as six inches per year during its earlier stages, but slows to about one inch per year as it approaches maturity.

This beautiful palm appreciates regular watering and fertilizing to maintain optimum health. We have seen it growing in a wide variety of conditions, from arid soil to standing water, and everything in between. While it tolerates salty winds beautifully, it does not like to be exposed to standing saltwater, such as saltwater flooding or brackish swamps. This magnificent palm is also wonderful for slightly more temperate conditions. Its cold tolerance is unrivaled by many palms, fairing well in temperatures dropping as low as an occasional 15 degrees Fahrenheit. While we wouldn't recommend trying to grow it in an area that regularly reaches cold temperatures, it can grow easily almost anywhere that the more sensitive palms cannot.

The Sabal Palm Tree is diverse for use in landscapes

Its leaf bases (also called boots) can be left in place for a basket weave effect, or shaved down for a smooth trunk. We are particularly fond of this palm for use in landscapes that require visual height. Its crown of fronds grows straight from the center, giving it a more vertical effect than most other palms. In the spring it produces clouds of tiny white, fragrant flowers that hang below the canopy. The seeds are almost reminiscent of cascades of Tahitian pearls with their dark color and rounded shape.

We carefully select each and every Sabal Palm Tree we sell.
